Course objectives
The aim of the course is to get the students acquainted with the beginnings of the Czech and European hagiographic and historiographic literature and trends in their evolution. Considerable part of the course will be devoted to the work with text (reading, interpreting, commenting on it and translating it). Therefore, the ability to understand a Latin text is required. First part of the course (6 sessions) deals with the three types of the ancient hagiographic, or martyrologic literature (acta, passiones, vitae) and their literary analysis. Their function as a means of social control will be pointed out. Second part of the course (6 sessions) deals with particular aspects of historiographic literature in High Middle Ages in Europe and Bohemia. Large part of each session will include reading and analysis of selected authors (Beda Venerabilis, Regino from Prüm, Cosmas Pragensis, Legenda Christiani etc.). The emphasis will be put on the themes, motives and other elements common to all the chronicles.
