Economic Policy

The Economic Policy study programme provides an excellent foundation and overview of theoretical and applied economics. Graduates can use and develop the acquired knowledge in the long-term, depending on the current labour market conditions and their employment.

During the study programme, students learn the possibilities and limits of economic policy. They learn how to analyse and predict economic developments, especially in terms of the current problems in the Czech and European economies. For a thorough understanding of current and historical economic developments and economic policies associated with it, students are guided through the historical development and the latest achievements of economic thinking, taught how to use simple but effective tools for quantitative analysis, and are provided with understanding both theoretically and through facilitated analysis and discussion of the fundamental historical current events that have influenced and changed the world’s economic development and its perception. The accuracy of the estimated growth rate of the economy is addressed. Students learn the beneficiaries and casualties of inflation as well as the introduction of the euro or its cancellation. They learn the real source of wealth, and many other less noble but useful facts.

After successfully completing his/her studies the graduate is able to:

• apply advanced methods of scientific work
• show deep comprehension of problems of economic policy and their macroeconomic consequences
• produce a professional style of expression in writing and speaking
• present, write reports, and discuss in English and another world language, both in general and economic terminology
• apply methods of quantitative analysis in addressing advanced economic topics, individually carry out economic model analysis and interpret results for practical purposes
• construct and identify basic econometric models using appropriate estimation methods to solve practical economic problems and to support optimal policy decisions
• comprehend advanced economic consequences of EU membership from both macroeconomic and microeconomic points of view
• work in national and regional administrations, in institutions that prepare the Czech Republic for its role within the EU, in EU institutions, in economic and research departments of banks, and in public and private financial institutions

The Economic Policy study programme educates complex and conceptual public policy makers who can find work in various sectors and branches of the national economy. Graduates can work in national and regional administrations, in institutions that prepare the Czech Republic for its role within the EU, in EU institutions, in economic and research departments of banks, and in public and private financial institutions. Consultancy and information companies and non-profit organization are interested in graduates of the study programme. Students can focus on public administration in the optional courses.

Practical training is not an obligatory part of the study plan. Students may attend a voluntary course of practical training.

The standard size of the diploma thesis is 60 000 to 80 thousand characters in the format according to the Directive of the Faculty of Economics and Administration of Masaryk University No. 9/2017 (without annexes). In the diploma thesis, each student demonstrates the ability of their own independent thinking and problem analysis. Students should demonstrate the ability to critically work with specialized texts, both in mother tongue and in a foreign language, and with the baseline data needed for the analysis. Prerequisite for successful defense of work is the original processing of the given topic.

After completing the Master’s degree study programme, it is possible to continue further studies in any doctoral degree study programme (after satisfying the admission requirements).
