The blind is the one who does not want to see.

Degree programme objectives

The aim of the study is to deepen the theoretical knowledge and practical skills in optometry and related fields in order to strengthen the ability to work in the interprofessional team and to use current modern techniques and to acquire the basics of scientific work in the field. The aim is also to strengthen selected educational or pedagogical skills.

Graduate, within the competences defined by the graduate's profile, applies to the qualified positions of specialized state and private workplaces focused on the issue of vision problematics, or participates in scientific research and professional studies. He/she is thus able to develop the full range of optometry.

In order to achieve this goal, the choice of the school and the specific profile of the graduate is focused on the theoretical and clinical knowledge of selected biomedical or related technical and socio-scientific disciplines. Furthermore, the study contains theoretical and practical specialized subjects focused on selected areas of optometry or related fields focused on topical subjects. The master of optometry knows the principles of complex optical and ophthalmology devices, can apply the requirements of vision functions, applies in practice the structure of care for the visually impaired and its organization.

  • Learning Outcomes

After successfully completing his/her studies the graduate is able to:

    • determine eye refraction including binocular balance
    • recommend an adequate type of optical correction aid, including visually impaired clients
    • fitt special contact lenses, educate the client
    • to participate in the prevention of serious eye diseases
    • perform metric measurements of the eye, to operate optometric and ophthalomological devices, findings consultate with ophthalomologist
    • to work fully in the interpersonal team of clinical, pediatric, sports optometry
    • to perform professional educational activity, research

  • Occupational Profiles of Graduates
The graduates of the master study program of optometry are employed as health service providers in program of eye care especially in specialized workplaces or clinics. In addition to clinical practice, the graduate is also employed in scientific and research work in the field or pedagogical activity. These activities are usually centered on higher education institutions or related fields.

Specifically, the graduate can work independently as an optician and optometrist in optometric outpatient clinics, opticians, ophthalmology, rehabilitation centers and other facilities, especially in the field of optical correction aids, in their selection and recommendation, in teaching vocational subjects at secondary and universities. He is a welcomed specialist especially in specialized centers. The graduate knows the legal provisions concerning all forms of visual impairment. It also focuses on related issues, such as eye-traffic, eye-sport and others, such as visually impaired and blind people.

  • Practical Training
Within the total hourly subsidy of the contact tuition program, the student has at least 10 per cent of the seminars and 25 per cent of the professional experience.
  • Goals of Theses
The diploma thesis forms an integral part of the study of the follow-up master program of Optometry. Its submission in term and funded defense is one of the conditions for successful graduation. The minimum extent of text of the diploma thesis is 60 pages without pictures, tables, charts and introductory pages, so the minimum of work without formal pages is at least 108 000 characters. The theoretical part consists of 1/2 - 3/4 of the total volume of work, if the topic follows the bachelor's thesis, more than 20% of the bachelor's thesis should not be used.

The outline of the diploma thesis should include:

    1. Introduction

    2. Theoretical part - individual chapters and subchapters

    3. Research part

3.1. Introduction to the research section

    3.1.1. Research goal

    3.1.2. Working hypothesis

    3.2. Research methodology

    3.2.1. Examined persons

    3.2.2. Used equipment and aids

    3.3. Results

3.4. Summary, discussion of results, analysis, comparison with other studies, case reports

    4. Conclusion of the work

    5. Attachment

    6. List of used literature

Other formalities are identical to the bachelor thesis, as well as citation of bibliographic sources, the scope of the annotation. To evaluate and processed can be used mathematical statistics and cooperation with professionals in field of statistics.

The student should demonstrate the ability to critically work with specialized texts, to elaborate the concepts and theories found in them and to find relevant answers to the given question. An important output is the discussion of hypotheses of the research section.

  • Access to Further Studies
A student of a master's degree program may, after meeting the conditions for admission, continue the doctoral degree program of a related field.
