Degree programme objectives
The aim of the study is to provide students with an extension of the general mathematical foundation in the supporting mathematical disciplines (Algebra and Mathematical Analysis) and a deeper comprehensive education in selected parts of modern mathematics. A continuously updated curriculum will ensure that they are able to engage in independent creative activity, acquiring new skills as needed for employment or future training. It will also provide them with skills and abilities that facilitate real-world problem solving and allow them to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
The study of mathematics develops the ability to think critically and apply mathematical thinking in everyday life. In studying mathematics, students will be introduced to a variety of interesting and useful suggestions for pursuing a range of mathematical careers in business, government, and industry.
We want to reach mathematically capable students and provide them with a thoughtful graduate program with courses that range from basic to advanced and reflect the research interests of the staff, the individual interests of the students, and the needs of the job market.

- Learning Outcomes
After successfully completing his/her studies the graduate is able to:
- understand the essence of the studied methods of modern mathematics, to have an overview of their interrelation and to actively develop and critically use them
- be in creative contact with current scientific knowledge within the chosen narrower focus
- analyse, structure and solve problems of a complex and challenging nature
- think abstractly and conceptually
- have a deeper knowledge of the field of his/her thesis
- Occupational Profiles of GraduatesThanks to the very high adaptability acquired through study and the ability to participate creatively in solving problems in a wide range of areas of modern mathematics, the application of graduates is quite universal and is not limited to workplaces with a purely research focus.
Graduates are well placed wherever mathematical imagination and the ability to think abstractly and conceptually can be used; in particular in basic research, in teaching at universities, in the creation of mathematical models in engineering and natural sciences, in the development of software, in institutes and companies where it is necessary to combine theoretical knowledge with concrete practical procedures.
- Goals of ThesesThe elaboration and defence of the Master's thesis is a compulsory part of the Mathematics study programme. By elaborating the master's thesis, the student demonstrates the ability to be oriented in the problems given by the topic of the master's thesis, the ability to work professionally under the guidance of his/her supervisor and the ability of written and oral presentation.
The standard thesis assignment period is in the first semester of the Master's degree. By assigning the Master's thesis, the teacher who wrote the topic becomes the supervisor of the Master's thesis for the student who chose it. The Department of Mathematics and Statistics registers and archives the written assignment of the Master's thesis. A student may suggest or agree on a topic for his/her Master's thesis to any teacher of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. In this case, the teacher proposes the topic of the Master's thesis for a particular student.
The guidelines for the preparation of the master's thesis are regulated by the Dean's Measure 5/2014 Guidelines for the preparation of bachelor's, master's and rigorous theses at the MU Faculty of Science.
- Access to Further StudiesAfter completion of the Master's studies in Mathematics, it is possible to continue further studies in any PhD programme (after satisfying the admission requirements).
