Criminal Law

Doctoral study programme is focused on scientific research and individual creative activity in the field of criminal law (substantive as well as procedural) and in related non-legal scientific disciplines (mainly criminology and criminalistics). In connection with criminal substantive and procedural law certain constitutional, international and European law aspects also do not stay aside. During the study, emphasis is put on theoretical side of aforesaid fields and disciplines in combination with their impact on elementary areas of criminal law practice. Furthermore, object and part of the study is acquirement of basics of scientific work and its application in publication activities. The program is intended mainly for those who would like to pursue academic career and scientific work and at the same time for those, who would like to gain deeper theoretical knowledge in the field of criminal law and to use it in criminal law practice.

After successfully completing his/her studies the graduate is able to:

• To comprehend methodology of scientific work in the field of law and legal science as well as related non-legal scientific disciplines, mainly criminology.
• To understand better theoretical basics of the field of criminal law.
• To connect criminal law aspects of analysed topics with aspects of related non-legal scientific disciplines (mainly criminology, penology, criminalistics, forensic disciplines).
• To reflect gained basic knowledge into solution of practical problems.
• To carry out individual creative and scientific activity in the field of criminal law.
• To present outcomes of the scientific activity on national as well as international forums.
• To carry out of teaching and other pedagogical actvities of an academic position.

Graduate of the doctoral study programme shall be prepared for specialized scientific work in the academic sphere, in the field of research or in criminal legislation, but also when exercising criminal justice, in the sphere of public prosecution and in other areas focused on criminal law and related non-legal scientific fields in which deep theoretical basics and their reflection into the application practise through interpretation and application of legal norms is necessary.

Practical training is not a part of the study.

Dissertation thesis is original scientific work processed on theme specified by the study plan. From contentual point of view, the text of dissertation thesis must prove high level of mastering chosen topic, including its theoretical and methodological context. Moreover, the text of dissertation thesis must prove ability of student to work with relevant domestic and foreign specialized literature and practice of general courts and the Constitutional Court, as well as ability to formulate expert opinions individually and to support them with persuasive argumentation. The minimum extent of dissertation thesis is 150 pages, while it is assumed that at time of its defense, the work itself or its substantial part will be published in some of usual ways (i. e. in form of reviewed articles, monographs, chapters in monographs, etc.). Detailed conditions considering format and editing of dissertation thesis are stated by the Dean of the Faculty and the Subject Board in form of internal regulation.
