Degree programme objectives

Doctoral studies in the field of Music Theory and Pedagogy create prerequisites for deeper professional orientation of graduates in work especially in the area of tertiary education, i.e. at universities, academies and institutions of the musical cultural focus. Graduates should be ready for a scientific-research career in academic institutions, such as post-graduate positions and assistant professors. The main focus of the study is on interdisciplinary relations – gaining expertise in the areas of general and musical aesthetics, semiotics, musical sociology, musical psychology and pedagogy.

  • Objectives
    Doctoral studies in the field of Music Theory and Pedagogy create prerequisites for deeper professional orientation of graduates in work especially in the area of tertiary education, i.e. at universities, academies and institutions of the musical cultural focus.   • Learning Outcomes

    After successfully completing his/her studies the graduate is able to:

    • deepen professional musical theoretical and pedagogical knowledge and skills for the needs of musical education practice
    • develop his/her aesthetic attitudes and critical thinking in the field of art in an attempt to shape the value orientation of the youth, based on his/her acquired knowledge and experience
    • be capable in unaided individual and team research work, including the evaluation of its results at the domestic and international level
    • intermediate the results of his/her research to the professional community: studies in peer-reviewed (or impacted) journals, in the form of a monograph, papers at the domestic and foreign conferences
    • develop his/her professional knowledge and skills based on an interdisciplinary view of related disciplines
    • competently perform the profession of academic staff at universities, academies and institutions of musical pedagogical focus

  • Occupational Profiles of Graduates
    Graduate employment is expected at universities, especially at the music departments at educational and similarly orientated faculties in the Czech Republic, and in various musical education institutions. Of course, there is also a graduate employment in secondary music schools, where he/she will offer a higher professional qualification than a master's degree graduate.
  • Practical Training
    The practice is fulfilled by:

    – the participation of the doctoral student in teaching in bachelor or master study programs

    – research assignments

    – active participation in conferences, symposia, professional seminars etc.

    – mobility / study stay

  • Goals of Theses
    As a dissertation, the original scientifical, theoretical, methodological and empirical theses are accepted, possibly combining these concepts in a suitable way.

    The theoretical theses elaborate various theoretical approaches to issues in the subject area, requiring a high degree of abstract and analytical thinking and insight.

    Methodological theses analyze (new) research approaches, methods, techniques of tools and evaluate their strengths and weaknesses.

    The empirical theses bring concrete findings obtained by specific research methods, and the present findings always result from an empirical survey.
