Degree programme objectives
The objective is to provide to talented Master's degree holders the possibility to continue their studies in the doctoral degree program Physics in such specializations which have excellent quality and traditions at the Faculty of Natural Sciences of MU and at cooperating institutions, mainly various institutes of the Czech Academy of Sciences. During his/her doctoral studies the student participates in research as a member of a research team, he/she usually partakes in objective financed research and is led in such a way as to become an independent researcher on concluding the doctoral program. Necessary conditions include the publication activity in prestigious international journals, active participation in meetings of scientific peers and usually a long-term stay abroad. This guarantees the ability to communicate with international research partners in English resp. other languages. Our aim is is to educate the students so that they are able to independently work at universities and research institutes in the Czech Republic as well as anywhere else in the world.Study plans

- Learning Outcomes
After successfully completing his/her studies the graduate is able to:
- Understand, explain and formulate intricate physical models
- Autonomously formulate, verify and-or reject hypotheses
- Produce, analyze, critically evaluate and physically interpret sientific data
- Write in a structured and critical way, prepare a scientific publication and present the results of her/his work at scientific conferences
- Work scientifically alone and/or as part of a group, potentially lead a group
- Occupational Profiles of GraduatesThe Physics PhD graduate becomes a member of a research team during the course of his/her studies, usually participates in objective-funded research and is led in such a way as to become an independent creative scientist. A long-term stay abroad is a common part of his/her studies and guarantees his/her ability to communicate in English and/or other languages with scientific peers. The graduate is able to do research and teach at universities and scientific research centers in the Czech Republic as well as anywhere else in the world. His/her knowledge, logical thinking, scientific world view and foreign language capabilities enable him/her to work in other areas as well: quantitative analyst, data scientist, consultant etc.
- Goals of ThesesThe dissertation topic and aims have to be specified by the time of the admission examination, it is an integral part of the individual study plan of the student and undergoes approval by the Specialist Board. Possible changes and adjustments of the dissertation topic are subject to approval by the Specialist Board based on the advisor's proposal. The student presents the results of his/her doctoral thesis investigations during the pertinent institute's seminars. The advisor is responsible for the financing of the research connected with topic of the doctoral dissertation.
The dissertation thesis is an original work created in the course of the doctoral studies under the direction of the advisor. It can follow up on findings acquired during previous studies, such findings have to be distinctly marked, e.g. using citations. At least part of the work undertaken during the doctoral studies has to be published or accepted for publication at the time of the presentation of the dissertation thesis in an impacted journal and the international scientific community has to be acquainted with these results by means of their presentation at a conference. The dissertation thesis can be written in Czech, Slovak or English. The thesis has a standard structure: introduction, methods, results, discussion, conclusion and bibliography. An abstract written in English has to be presented. Extent is not specified, high expertise and quality formal layout is decisive. According to article 30/2 of the Study and Examination Guidelines a dissertation in the form of publications provided with unifying and comprehensive commentary can be submitted so that a coherent work emerges (the publications need not be rewritten into a manuscript). The dissertation thesis is appended by the author's curriculum vitae and his/her list of publications. (This pertains to both forms of submission.) In the event that the scientific results were acquired collectively the dissertation has to contain the specification of the student's part (Article 30/4 b-c). A solid binding of the thesis is required that can not be dismantled. At least three copies have to be submitted, an additional electronic copy in the information system of the university is required. A written review presentation is not required. The dissertation is assessed usually by three opponents with at least the scientific title of PhD or equivalent (CSc., Dr.).
