Hellenic Studies

The study program Hellenic Studies prepares students for scholarly work in the field of Greek Philology from the Late Antiquity to the present times. It deepens their theoretical and methodological background necessary for scholarly work and teaches them how to organize and successfully conduct independent scientific research. Graduates obtain firm understanding of the entire discipline of Hellenic Studies and specialize in a particular epoch and linguistic or literary research depending on the topic of their dissertation.

After successfully completing his/her studies the graduate is able to:

• understand well the entire discipline of Hellenic Studies, have a good notion of the relevant professional forums and the latest developments in the field
• work critically with sources and secondary literature
• specialize in the topics of their dissertation
• pursue methodologically well-grounded basic research in their field that produces new knowledge and ideas
• present the results of their research to a professional audience, including the international one
• build international contacts and establish co-operation with other scholars within their discipline.

Graduates are professional scholars in the field of Hellenic Studies, specialized, at the very least, in one selected period of Greek language and/or literature development (Late Antiquity, Byzantium, Modern Greek). They are well-equipped to work in the academia as researchers or university employees. Given the international dimension of their schooling, they have prerequisites for working abroad. Their firm theoretical and methodological background makes them ideal candidates for interdisciplinary research. Outside the academia, their professional formation allows them to work in the sectors of tourism, diplomacy or translation.

A stay at a foreign scholarly institution which enable the students to widen their theoretical and practical portfolios forms an obligatory/integral part of the educational process, to obtain international experience and contacts.

Standard scope of a PhD thesis ranges from 220.000 to 360.000 characters including footnotes, cover sheet, index, content, literature and annotations. PhD thesis showcases the results of an independent empirical research and produces new knowledge and impulses to the field. At the same time, the thesis proves the erudition of the students in the modern theory of narration and their familiarity with the available sources.
