Degree programme objectives
The programme Teaching Czech language and literature at secondary schools is aimed at graduates from the B.A. study programme Czech Language and Literature, its aim being to prepare future secondary school teachers for their profession in a versatile way. The study programme consists of two inseparable parts: from the part focused on the discipline that strengthens and develops skills in the sphere of Czech studies form the viewpoints of linguistics and literature and from the part focused on pedagogy, psychology and didactics with the focus on Czech studies, providing students with the necessary theoretical basis and developing their skills in pedagogy and didactics that give them the possibility to work effectively as secondary school teachers. Who the programme is intended for: The programme is intended for graduates of the same Bachelor’s degree programme the subject of which is very close to the field of Czech Language and Literature at FA MU (the similarity of the fields will be assessed based on the application). Applicants whose mother tongue is not Czech and who have not taken the Czech language matriculation exam at secondary school in the Czech Republic and/or have not completed a bachelor's degree programme in Czech language and literature at a university in the Czech Republic are expected to have a C1 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
Subject matter of the entrance examination: Two-round admission procedure. Knowledge in the scope of topic areas for the Bachelor’s state examination of the Czech Language and Literature programme is required (see the websites of Department of Czech Language and Department of Czech Language and Literature FA MU). For non-native speakers who have not passed the Czech language matriculation examination at a secondary school in the Czech Republic and/or have not completed a Bachelor's programme in Czech language and literature at a university in the Czech Republic, the admission procedure includes an examination of their language level. In this examination at C1 level, a final grade of 1 or 2 is a condition for admission. The exam lasts several hours and tests the applicant's linguistic and spelling knowledge, written and oral expression and comprehension of spoken text).
1st round: written examination, in which the applicant demonstrates knowledge corresponding to the profile of a graduate of the degree program B-CJ_ Czech Language and Literature at FA MU (the max. score on the written examination is 100 points). The written examination will be waived if the applicant has completed the Bachelor’s programme B-CJ_ Czech Language and Literature at FA MU, with their final grade in the interval A-C or with a grade of "passed with excellent results" (graduates of the minor plan will be recognized by the state final exam in Czech language and literature in the same interval A-C or with a grade of "passed with excellent results"), no more than one year (two semesters) must have passed since the completion of the Bachelor's degree; or within the B-CJ_ Czech Language and Literature programme at the Faculty of Arts MU they have earned at least 20 credits during a semester study abroad (e.g. in the Erasmus programme). Applicants can ask for a waiver for the entrance examination via the e-application form, section "Application for waiver of the entrance examination".
2nd round: oral exam; it is necessary to successfully pass the 1st round. The oral examination does not test the applicant’s knowledge, but the professional prerequisites of the applicant for the study of Czech studies, the applicant's motivation to study, and their reading competence - the applicant should briefly present their Bachelor’s thesis to the committee (ideally submit a copy to the admission committee) and submit a reading list. (the max. score on the oral examination is 100 points). The oral part is mandatory for all applicants who are successful in the 1st round of the admission procedure.
We recommend to those interested in Master’s studies to acquire knowledge in the scope of requirements for the Bachelor’s state examination in Czech Language and Literature at FA MU, as the Master’s studies follow it. Any differences between the Czech Language and Literature Bachelor’s degree programme at FA MU and similar study programmes at other universities will be complemented by the students themselves during the Master’s studies (those interested will be allowed to participate in relevant Bachelor’s courses, including consultations with teachers).

Pass/fail line of the entrance examination: written examination - 45 points (out of 100) to enable the candidate to proceed to the oral part; oral examination 65 points (out of 100) to succeed in the admissions process.

- Learning Outcomes
After successfully completing his/her studies the graduate is able to:
- to teach Czech language and literature at secondary schools or in other institutions focused on education;
- to get orientated in elementary topics as well as in current trends in pedagogical and psychological disciplines and to process critically the knowledge relating to the pedagogical and psychological basis;
- to plan, realize and evaluate in an effective way their own teaching in accordance with standards set by current curricular documents;
- when planning and carrying out their teaching, to take into consideration individual needs of students, with regard to the style of teaching, maturity, personality, skills and talents (as well as to understand the principles of inclusive education);
- to get orientated in fundamentals of e-learning and modern teaching technologies and to use them in teaching practice;
- to work with materials in textbooks in a critical way;
- to apply basic principles of didactics of Czech language and literature in secondary school practice;
- to understand linguistic and literary theories, concepts and methodologies of work with texts, relevant for the practice of secondary school teachers;
- to have command of codification of Standard Czech;
- to have command of creating and interpreting texts;
- to have the knowledge of changes of Czech language and literature in historical, cultural and international connections;
- to develop reading literacy of students.
- Occupational Profiles of GraduatesGraduates can find positions at secondary schools and at higher professional schools of various kinds and specializations. They are also ready to teach Czech to native as well as to non-native speakers in other institutions focused on education. Besides, they can hold numerous other positions in which abilities of creative work with texts and use of cultivated language are required.

- Practical TrainingThe aim of the teaching practice is to gain and develop pedagogical and didactic competences necessary for the profession of a secondary school teacher. The teaching practice is divided into two following one-term courses. The number of credits differs in joint plans and in the single-subject plan, depending on the number of hours (joint study plans – 12 credits in total, the single-subject plan – 24 credits). The teaching practice primarily takes place at selected secondary schools. Partial components of preparatory and evaluative stages take place at the faculty, being organised in the form of groups of seminars and workshops.
- Goals of ThesesRequirements relating to formal aspects of theses, their minimum extent and form of submission follow valid regulations of the Faculty of Arts, Masaryk University. A thesis pays attention to a selected issue relating to linguistics or literature viewed from the perspective of teaching practice. It is based on an empirical research based on an innovative approach of the student to the particular topic. The first part of a thesis deals with a theoretical profile of the topic, the second part on its application in teaching practice. Working on the thesis, students will use their knowledge gained in theoretically and practically orientated courses of the study programme for future teachers as well as during the teaching practice.
