Degree programme objectives
The aim of this four-year doctoral degree study programme is to prepare fully qualified university experts. The study programme offers highly specialized and individualized studies that include scholarly work in the fields of music history, sociology, aesthetics, music theory, and organology. The study programme specializes in both early and modern Czech and European music culture with special attention to some themes, including the music activities of religious brethren in Moravia in early modern times, court music, Leoš Janáček, Alois Hába, the study of audience taste, and the relationship between music theory and aesthetics in the 19th and 20th centuries. Graduates are fully qualified for work requiring expert knowledge and critical thinking. They master the subject discourse and methodological aspects of individual disciplines. They are equipped with thorough knowledge of the subject of their specialization. They carry out independent creative expert and scholarly work. Admission ProceduresAdmission to Doctoral degree programmes in 2025/2026 (beginning: Autumn 2025)Submission deadline until midnight 30/4/2025

Deadline for submitting documents for the admission procedure: May 15
Documents for the admission procedure:
- signed CV;
- list of publishing activities;
- doctoral thesis project.
Documents for the admission procedure must be inserted into the e-application (rubric “Documents”) by 15 May. Applicants are required to include their full name and application number on all attached documents. The entrance examination takes the form of an oral discussion over the doctoral project.
Notice: A poof of completion of a Master’s degree programme (officially certified copy of the diploma, in the case of education obtained abroad also the so-called recognition) shall be submitted by the accepted applicants upon enrolment in the studies. For the entrance examination, a proof of completion of a Master’s degree programme is not required.

- Pass/fail line: 70 points (out of 100). The applicant is assessed in the following areas: the doctoral thesis project - max. 50 points, motivation - max. 25 points, professional readiness - max. 25 points.

After successfully completing his/her studies the graduate is able to:
- manage independent creative expert and scholarly work
- master the subject discourse and methodological problems of individual disciplines in full
- demonstrate thorough knowledge of the subject of specialization
- speak at least two major languages and present work results in them
- be informed about present-day musicological and socio-cultural trends
- Occupational Profiles of GraduatesGraduates are fully qualified for work in a field that requires expert knowledge and critical thinking. Graduates are employed in universities, high schools, and in scholarly and cultural institutions.
- Goals of ThesesIn the thesis, the student submits the results of their work that were created during the studies of the doctoral programme. The thesis must contain original results, either already published or accepted for publication. Detailed requirements for the publication of results and the extent of the thesis will be designated by the Doctoral Board. A file of already published works or works accepted for publishing to the press or other type of publication which are related to the given field and have a comprehensive introduction to the issue and commentary by the student may also be recognized as a thesis.
The thesis is written in the language in which the doctoral programme is conducted, or in a language which is specified for this purpose in the characteristics of the doctoral programme. For the doctoral programme conducted in Czech language, the faculty may issue a declaration that allows to submit the thesis in Slovak language.
The thesis is always submitted electronically via IS MU. If determined by the Doctoral Board, the thesis is also submitted in printed form. The thesis must also comply with the following requirements:
(a) If it is determined that the thesis should be submitted in printed form, the cover and the title page must have a uniform layout, the work must have a uniform format common to the faculty and all copies must be hard-bound. The number of copies is determined by the Doctoral Board.
b) If the student submits the results of collective scientific work in which they participated for the thesis defense, the parts of the student's work must be clearly marked. A statement by the supervisor confirming the student's authorship and evaluating their contribution must be attached.
