The management of water resources is currently a very topical topic resonating throughout society, not only in connection with climate change, but with the overall concept of sustainable development of modern human society.

The aim of the two-year master's follow-up program is to prepare highly qualified experts in the field of water resources management. They will be able to independently solve practical tasks in the protection of existing water resources, analyze the risks of endangering them and, using modern methodological procedures, propose solutions suitable for the sustainable use of water resources. The program is designed as a multidisciplinary one, on the border between geological and geographical disciplines. Graduates will thus understand the complexity of the occurrence of water in the landscape and mutual interactions between forms of water in individual components of the environment. They will be able to analyze the processes of water distribution in the landscape and the possibilities of its use for humans.

The program is specific by linking theoretical knowledge with practical knowledge and skills acquired in highly specialized courses. To guarantee the transfer of practical knowledge and skills, experts from practice will participate in the teaching. Cooperation in direct teaching as well as the provision of topics for practical tasks solved in exercises will make it possible to prepare graduates required on the labor market. The aim of these diploma theses will be to solve specific problems of water management, in direct cooperation with professional organizations from practice.

  • Objectives

  • Learning Outcomes

    After successfully completing his/her studies the graduate is able to:

    • understand the principles of water circulation and the formation of groundwater
    • present the results of their work in the form of an oral presentation supported by a graphic presentation
    • summarize and formulate the conclusions of the solved problem into a comprehensible text of the final report and process the graphic appendices of the final report
    • to know the main structures important for water management in the Czech Republic and to understand the principles of formation and circulation of groundwater in these structures
    • evaluate the water balance of the region and define water volumes in individual reservoirs
    • to understand the legislation related to water management
    • to obtain water management data from public databases of the state administration relevant for solving a specific problem
    • to propose the methodology and scope of survey work to find a water source
    • write a project of technical works for excavating a new water-supply well, including the text part, graphic and technical documentation
    • to design a suitable raw water treatment technology according to the water quality requirements for users

    • formulate and evaluate the risks of wasteful use of water resources, propose appropriate solutions for the elimination of these risks
    • propose protective zones of the water resource based on the analysis of natural conditions and use of the water resource, or revise the existing protective zones

  • Occupational Profiles of Graduates
    The specific advantage of the graduates of this program in the context of other universities is the significant degree of involvement of experts from practice in teaching and solving practical problems from practice not only in direct teaching, but also in diploma theses. Graduates will thus be highly qualified experts on the labor market, ready for immediate involvement in practice.

    Graduates are expected to be employed primarily in private companies and state organizations focused on geology, construction, spatial planning, agriculture, etc. Graduates can also find employment in positions in state administration, especially at the regional level (regional authorities, municipal water authorities with extended scope) .

  • Practical Training
    Classical practice is not relevant in this program. However, within the specialized subjects of the subjects "Practical tasks of water management", "Water resources management" and "Water management - field trips" students complete short-term internships of 3 days within each subject in selected professional organizations with which the ÚGV PřF workplace has MU negotiated framework agreements on cooperation and partnership (primarily water companies). An optional subject is a 2-week internship in companies.
  • Goals of Theses
    The diploma thesis is limited to a maximum of 50 standard pages per text part of the thesis, separate graphical, tabular appendices and technical documentation are beyond the stated scope. Theses topics are assigned in cooperation with professional organizations from practice; diploma theses are solutions to specific problems often required in water management practice. The diploma thesis has the character of an independent project, in which the student must demonstrate the ability to process a specific problem based on his own data analysis and subsequent synthesis into a clearly formulated conclusion or proposals for problem solving variants. Taken primary data can also be used in the work. The work must include an assessment of the solved problem in the context of the applicable legislation in water management.
  • Access to Further Studies
    A graduate of the follow-up study program Water Resources Management can, if successfully accepted, continue their studies in a doctoral study program.
