Course objectives
The aim of the course is to provide an introduction to the basic principles of academic writing. Students will familiarise themselves with the whole writing process from the choice of an appropriate topic and planning the text structure to the final proofreading and editing. Students will be able to choose suitable strategies to approach the topic and the text making sure they are appropriate to the task and to their specific learning difficulties.
Syllabus
  • 1. Selecting the topic (narrowing and widening the topic, guidelines for choosing the topic), academic writing process
  • 2. Strategies of getting a better understanding of the topic (brainstorming, mind maps, SWOT analysis)
  • 3. Paragraph structure, paragraph linking, groups of paragraphs, text coherence
  • 4. Basic composition functions (comparison, critical approach, definition, explaining, concluding, evaluation)
  • 5. Essay (characteristic features, basic types, how to write an essay, argumentative essay)
  • 6. Abstract (definition, types of abstracts, how to write an abstract, grammar and stylistics used in abstract)
  • 7. Frequent mistakes in arguments and in academic text composition
