Prerequisites
The course is designed for pairs of students (deaf and hearing). For the hearing student, at least basic knowledge of Czech Sign Language is expected, to communicate with a deaf colleague. Among the Deaf, sufficient knowledge of Czech Sign Language is needed to be able to communicate with a deaf witness and to analyze his narrative in video.
Course Enrolment Limitations
The course is offered to students of any study field.
Course objectives
The goal is to learn more about the culture of the Czech deaf and their identity by searching for personal memories of the deaf people. Students will record the personal stories of the deaf witnesses (both in writing and on camera), so getting to know Czech deaf community. Outcomes of the course will be included in the Memory of Nation (www.pametnaroda.cz) into a separate stand-alone section Memory of the Czech Deaf.
Syllabus
  • Building working pairs (deaf and hearing student).
  • Finding (individually or on teacher's recommendation ) and then contacting deaf witnesses in any region of ​​the Czech Republic.
  • Visiting the witness, chatting with him, video recording and submission of narrative storytelling on DVD or USB flash drive.
  • Processing the recorded narration of the deaf witnesses in Czech Sign Language - selecting 3-5 short sequences to be inserted into www.pametnaroda.cz (section: Memory of the Czech Deaf).
  • Transcribing the recorded stories in Czech to insert them into www.pametnaroda.cz (section: Memory of the Czech Deaf).
  • Creating an outline - writing a summary of the life story to insert it into www.pametnaroda.cz (section: Memory of the Czech Deaf).
  • Etditing the life story of the witness in Czech language and subsequent translation into Czech Sign Language).
  • Editing selected parts of the narrative of deaf witnesses in the Czech language.
  • Writing a structured curriculum vitae in the Czech language (to ber proof-read by the teacher).
  • Writing a short continuous comment in Czech (one longer paragraph - about half a standard page) to be proof-read by the teacher, the subsequent translation into CSL and sending proofs.
  • Translation the CV in English (optional activity).
  • Photographic evidence - pictures of the witness and one or more photographs from the personal archives of the witness (scan).
  • Creating and inserting a motto into the content management system

Practical self-training, working sessions.
Assessment methods
Credit for fulfilling independently the task: - submission of the outputs on the DVD or flash drive - insertion of processed materials to the CMS Web site www.pametnaroda.cz (section: Memory of the Czech Deaf) - processing of all materials according to guidelines - sctive participation in working sessions
