Course objectives (in Czech)
Tento kurz je určen pro studenty všech fakult Masarykovy univerzity se sluchovým postižením. Slouží jako předstupeň kurzu Angličtina pro neslyšící III, alternativy k povinné výuce odborné angličtiny na některých oborech na MU. Výstupní úroveň tohoto kurzu je přibližně B1 podle Společného evropského referenčního rámce.
Syllabus
  • Lesson 1 - What are they like? VOCABULARY: family, personality adjectives GRAMMAR: present tenses revision, questions WRITING: describing yourself PRACTICAL LANGUAGE: classroom language;
  • Lesson 2 - The man who is sitting next to me has a big nose VOCABULARY: body, prepositions of place, prepositions of time (before, after, until) GRAMMAR: relative clauses (defining and non-defining), so, because, although, when... PRACTICAL LANGUAGE: saying hello + goodbye;
  • Lesson 3 - What was he doing when you saw him? VOCABULARY: holidays, weather prepositions of time, irregular verbs GRAMMAR: past simple revision, past continuous, who + what - subject/ object (questions with and without auxiliaries) WRITING: postcard/e-mail from holidays PRACTICAL LANGUAGE: at the airport;
  • Lesson 4 - What are you going to wear to the party? VOCABULARY: clothes (What are you going to wear?), opposite verbs GRAMMAR: future tenses: will, going to, present continuous WRITING: informal e-mail (information about a planned trip/ holiday camp);
  • Lesson 5 - I've known my husband for twelve years VOCABULARY: verb phrases - make, do, take GRAMMAR: present perfect simple +for, since, yet, already (x past simple);
  • Lesson 6 - A horse is faster than a donkey VOCABULARY: adjectives and adverbs, animals GRAMMAR: adjectives and adverbs revision (comparative + superlative, as...as, superlative + ever + present perfect) PRACTICAL LANGUAGE: agreeing/ disagreeing;
  • Lesson 7 - Have we been to this restaurant before? VOCABULARY: time expressions, food and restaurants GRAMMAR: tense review PRACTICAL LANGUAGE: apologies;
  • Lesson 8 - The film is based on a true story VOCABULARY: films + books GRAMMAR: passive (present and past simple and future) WRITING: film/ book review PRACTICAL LANGUAGE: Talking about films;
  • Lesson 9 - To be, or not to be? VOCABULARY: verbs + ing , verbs + to GRAMMAR: uses of infinitive (purpose, have something done, certain verbs), verbs followed by –ing PRACTICAL LANGUAGE: feelings + opinions;
  • Lesson 10 - I am tired because I have too much to do VOCABULARY: noun formation, adjectives ending -ed or -ing GRAMMAR: have to, don’t have to, must, mustn’t, should, may, might PRACTICAL LANGUAGE: asking politely;
  • Lesson 11 - I've a terrible flu VOCABULARY: health and lifestyle, illnesses GRAMMAR: quantifiers: most, none, both, all, (n)either, too, too much/many, (not) enough; something, nothing, anybody, everywhere... WRITING: CV PRACTICAL LANGUAGE: expressing wish;

Assessment methods
Students are allowed two absences in a semester. Absence needs to be previously arranged and approved by the teacher. Additional absences need to be evidenced. One of the prerequisites for the completion of the course is home preparation and doing assignments. Credit: Students must sit for the end-of-course test. Students must obtain at least 60% of the total number of points available in the end-of-course test. Exam: 1 Students must sit for the mid-test. Mid-test assessment grid: Less than 40% in the mid-test -> -3 points from the end-of-course test score 40-50% = -2 50-60%= -1 60-70% = 0 70-80% = +1 80-90% = +2 90-100% = +3 2 Students must sit for the end-of-course test. Students must obtain at least 60% of the total number of points available in the end-of-course test including the points received in the mid-test.
