Course objectives
The aim of the course is to provide an introduction to the basic principles of work with academic texts. Students will be able to evaluate the relevance of information sources, to use search queries, and to find documents they need. They will be able to select strategies that are appropriate to the task (reading strategies, note taking, etc.) and their specific learning difficulties.

  • 1. Information (definition, types of information, information ethics)
  • 2. Searching for information (writing search queries, relevance of information sources, electronic information resources)
  • 3. Reading academic texts (reading strategies, searching for relevant information, types of reading)
  • 4. Introduction to critical textual evaluation and analysis
  • 5. Types of academic texts (overview of the different types and their particular characteristics)
  • 6. Structure of academic texts
  • 7. In-text citations, bibliographic referencing, citation styles
