- Course objectives
- The main objective of the course is to explain the basis of banking whose knowledge will be used in further study of banking. It focuses on analysis of the Central Bank activities, the position of Central Bank in the economy, its functions and instruments. Students will become familiar with commercial banking, and functions and types of commercial banks. The course analyzes the position and functions of the European Central Bank, the European System of Central Banks, system of cross-border payments in the European Union and the development trends of banking systems.
Students will acquire knowledge of the banking system both in the CR and EU. - Syllabus
- 1. Banking system, financial system, relations, institutions, types of banking systems
- 2. Central Bank, its role in economy, functions, tools, relations to commercial banks
- 3. Central Bank, transmission mechanism of monetary policy, current tools of the monetary policy, European Central Bank, European System of Central Banks
- 4. Commercial banks, basic functions, shareholders capital, stability, liquidity, classification of activities of commercial banks, balance of commercial banks
- 5. Commercial banks, credit process, client rating, financial and non-financial indicators
- 6. Types of credit offered by commercial banks, background, usage, project financing
- 7. Alternative forms of financing, business with liabilities, venture capital, leasing, bank guarantees
- 8. Interbank payment system in the Czech Republic and EU, world systems, definition and essence of cheques
- 9. Foreign exchange operations, spot and futures operations, financial derivatives
- 10. Cash operations of banks, function of commercial banks in cash flow, methodology of central banks
- 11. Electronic communication with commercial banks, payment cards 12. Investment banking, operations with securities, collective investment

- Assessment methods
- The course finishes with a written exam.
Students are allowed to take the final exam after the following criteria have been met:
- seminar work has been elaborated, handed over and marked with: passed by a tutor within a set time schedule;
- passing of both in-term check tests.
Final mark consist of two components:
- written exam (80%) + seminar papers, tests based on self-study (20%).
Tutorials are scheduled in three two-hour blocks; the content corresponds to topics as follows:
1st tutorial: Topic 1-4 2nd tutorial: Topic 5 – 8, first test 3rd tutorial: Topic 9 – 13, second test - Language of instruction
