Course objectives
The course deals with basic economic, social, demographic, environmental and architectural knowledge of countryside. After introductory definition of countryside students become acquainted with basic statistical information of the Czech countryside. Attention is also paid to cultural values of countryside. The issue of countryside environment is based on sustainable development of countryside and on the importance of landscape preservation and renewal. Following issues are land arrangement and agricultural utilization of landscape. Basic possibilities of countryside restoration are introduced (Program of countryside restoration). Students also become acquainted with EU approach emphasizing improvement of countryside environment quality (e.g. LEADER initiative). At the end of this course, students should be able to understand and solve relevant problems of rural development.
Syllabus
  • 1. Basic concepts (countryside, country space, country region and possible ways of defining countryside).
  • 2. Country space and landscape form architectural and urbanistic point of views.
  • 3. Cultural values as one of factors forming country space.
  • 4. Possibilities of preservation, protection, regeneration and creation of cultural environment and cultural values of countryside.
  • 5. Economic aspects influencing rural development.
  • 6. Demographic development of countryside.
  • 7. Residential function of countryside.
  • 8. Restoration of countryside.
  • 9. Countryside and the environment (landscape, restoration of landscape, protected areas, biodiversity and sustainable development).
  • 10. Lands and land revisions and arrangement.
  • 11. Multifunctional agriculture, forestry, countryside and tourism.
  • 12. Common agricultural policy of the EU.
  • 13. Supporting programmes of rural development.
