- Course objectives
- The main objectives of the course is to introduce students to the field of sociology of organization, bureaucracy and sociology of work.
The course is structured in according to these main goals:
1. Students get a general orientation in the history of sociological approaches to organization and work.
2. Students will have chance to apply theoretical knowledge to the study of individuals and groups within an organization.
The course´s ambition is to incorporate the sociological and economical perspective. - Syllabus
- 1. Introduction to the issues of formal organizations
- 2. Classical period of the theories of organization and theories of bureaucracy
- 3. Criticism of the classical period of theories of organization
- 4. Hawthorn's experiments and changes in the paradigm of the organization studies
- 5. Relation between an individual and organization
- 6. Typology of approaches to an individual in the organizational context
- 7. The newest approaches to an organization
- 8. Organization from the viewpoint of the main sociological paradigms
- 9. The topic of groups in the sociology of an organization
- 10. Group structure and dynamics
- 11. Sociometric technique

- Teaching methods
- The course takes the form of seminars. Each seminar begins with the presentation of a given topic continued by discussions and presentations. Teaching methods focus on the developing ability of the students to analyze various social dimensions of organizational life.
- Assessment methods
- Credit requirements:
achieving 75% presence in seminars and active participation,
presentation of a (short) paper
mastering a written test.
If students commit a prohibited act, such as using various forbidden tools, cribbing, taking out any part of the exam or any other cheating, the teacher is allowed to interrupt an exam and to grade a student with F, FF or FFF according to the seriousness of the offence. The mentioned procedure relates to all the activities that are included in the final evaluation of the course (seminar work, essays, tests etc.). - Language of instruction
