- Course objectives
- The course provides the students with the understanding of the organizational behavior and the behavior of individuals inside organizations necessary for efficient organization management and development. The course is of an interdisciplinary character as it incorporates the findings of psychology, sociology and management on a practical level and it explains the organizational behavior and the behavior of individuals inside from a wider perspective of organizational behavior efficiency.
The course objectives are:
- to make students understand the main patterns of the behavior of organizations and of the individuals inside;
- to teach students to predict the tendencies in the organizational behavior and the behavior of individuals inside;
- to develop the students’ skills to select measures purposefully to influence individuals, groups and organizations as a whole to enhance their efficiency. - Syllabus
- The lessons take the form of three workshops in which both lectures and tutorials are combined.
- Thematic blocks: Block 1: A. Organizational behavior and its study.Organization, organizational behavior – term definition. An interdisciplinary approach to their studies and to understanding organizations. Organizations and environment.
- B. Individuals in organizations. Personality. Personality determinants of performance and individual behavior inside organizations, individual differences. Work motivation and job satisfaction. Work roles, role conflicts, role overload. Stress and its sources within an organization.Perception and learning in an organization.Social perception and its principles, social stereotypes. Theory of learning, individual differences in learning. Individual socialization and adaptation in an organization.
- Block 2: Work groups and their management.Formal and informal groups. Group roles, group structure. Group processes and behavior. Efficiency of work groups. Work groups and their management. A work group and a work team. Team types, characteristics of team work. Team roles. Selection of team members, team development. Leadership styles, leadership style typology, leadership style choice with respect to the characteristics of the organization and the work groups.Organizational relationships and their dynamics. Power in an organization, sources of power, influence of power distribution on organizational behavior and decision making. Organizational politics. Organizational conflicts, sources of conflicts, conflict management.
- Block 3: Organizational development and change. External and internal causes of the necessity for organizational change. Stages of organizational development, development crises. Types of organizational changes, model of change management. Sources of resistance to change, breaking resistance to change.Developing organization in order to enhance its efficiency. A learning organization, its characteristics and significance. Organizational culture and its creation.Term definition, organizational culture elements, organizational culture structure. Organizational culture sources. The content and the power of organizational culture, organizational subcultures. Functions of organizational culture, its influence on organizational behavior. Organizational culture influence on organization’s efficiency. Conflict of subcultures within an organization, its consequences. The significance of organizational culture content and power in public sector organizations. Organizational culture and ethics. Knowledge of organizational culture as a pre-requisite for efficient creation of the desired organizational culture type.Process of the desired organizational culture formulation. Tools for desired organizational culture creation. Organizational culture and New Public Management.

- Assessment methods
- The final examination is written. The conditions for being allowed to take the final test include the following:
1) writing up an individual seminar paper on the assigned topic,
2) team elaboration of the assigned case study, presentation of the team work during the last seminar, the quality of the case study elaboration and its presentation. - Language of instruction
