Course objectives

Introduction to the study of psychology starts with the humanistic approach to the human being as a person, entity and as an agent of social relationships, taking into account the biological determination and his links in the micro-, mezo-, exo- and macrosystem environment, with regard to lifelong process of evolution. In the introductory part of the course phylogeny and ontogenesis of humans are explained, leading to psychosomatic treatise on selected issues of the human individuality. The lectures strart with the concept of a man as a natural and social being and proceed to the interpretation of internal and external image of the personality, problems of human perception and behaviour. Human internal world is analyzed in terms of behaviour motivation, personality dynamics, biological balance of power and possibilities of man. The personality-focused schedule of topics proceeds to evolutionary changes of personality, methods of psychological congnition and the matter of categorization and recognition of mental disorders. At the end, the ambiguous issue of maintaining active mental and physical health is placed. Interpretation of the psychological nature of humans is supplemented with philosophical , cultural-anthropological, medical and environmental insights.

At the end of this course, students should be able to:
- understand their own experiential world and that of the others
- acquire skills to analyze and understand human activity
- be well informed of human motives of behaviour
- manage stressful situations

Syllabus

• Thematic plan and content of the course (according to the weeks of tuition):
• 1) Introduction to the basics of personal psychology. Traditional approach. Current knowledge of interdisciplinary approach from eco-philosophy, sociology, antropology, and ecology.
• 2) Human phylogeny and ontogenesis. What is man and how is he conditioned by biology? Biological fundamentals of psyche. Factors forming personality. Inheritance and environment. Processes of personality formation. Influence of socialization. Man and nature. Man and culture.
• 3) Internal image of personality. Awareness of the world and ourselves? Me - integrating factor of mental life. Genesis of awareness of ego. Self-reflection - image of myself. Aspiration and level of aspiration. Evaluation of myself.
• 4) External image of personality. Behaviour - the key to the external image of a human. Manners. Fundamentals of behaviour. External image of a human. Corporeal appearance. Means of expressions.
• 5) Motivation of human behaviour. Problem of motivation. Motives in the context of working realtionships. Sources of motivation. Motives of job satisfaction. Need of personalization. Theoretical concept of motivation. Barriers of optimal working motivation.
• 6) Biological personality dynamism. Temperament. Temperament concept. Temperament and emotions. Types of temperament. Biorhythms and personality. Chemism of an organism and psyche. Psychological model of temperament.
• 7) Dynamic balance of a human. Process of psychical adaptation. Adaptative dynamism. Dynamism of learnt powerlessness. Dynamism of locator activity. Frustration. Manners of reaction to frustration. Emotions as means of adaptation. Volition and adaptation of personal maturity.
• 8) Performance potential of a human. Personal presumption of performance. Intelligence. Human brain and its performance. Brain functions and problem of artificial intelligence. Creativity. Changes in working productivity and creativity. Changes of working abilities in the ageing process.
• 9) Human and his orientation in the world. Human as an open cognitive system. Human as a knowing subject - a part of different ecosystems and cultures. Cognition manners and interactive functions in the human structure.
• 10) Ontogenesis of human psyche. Phylogeny, ontogenesis and current genesis. Ontogenesis of human psyche. Psyche as an evolutionary process. Periodization of human life career. Sensitive evolution periods.
• 11) Methods of human recognition. Observation. Interview. Anamnesis. Psychological tests - tests of performance and personal tests. Human study in working activity.
• 12) Pathology of mental life. Resources of mental disturbances. Classification of mental disturbances. Disturbances of experiences. Disturbances of behaviour. Disturbances of intellect. Toxicomania, alcoholism, gamblerism.
• 13) Resources of human health. The meaning of lifestyle rectifications. Human as a psychosomatic unit. The meaning of positive thinking. Human adaptation in challenging situations. Stress and its influence on human performance. Psychosomatic reaction to stress. Zones of Reich. Locomotive and respiratory correction of the stress. Anti-stress organization of thinking.

Teaching methods

The class consits of a self-preparation done by student at home and a consultation held at the faculty. For each consultation student is obliged to review given topics (theoretical preparation). In the class the information is delivered in the form of a lecture joined with discussions or solving a case study. Student is handing in based on his choice one of the following assignments: essay, reflection, report.

Assessment methods

Elaboration of a seminar paper.
The final written test consists of 3 open questions with a time limit of 30 minutes. Classification scale ranges from A to F and the condition of a pass is that no question is classified with F.
Important information! If a student commits a prohibited act, such as usage of various forbidden tools, cribbing, taking out any part of the exam or any other cheating, the teacher is allowed to interrupt an exam and to grade a student with F, FF or FFF according to the seriousness of the offence. Mentioned procedure relates to all the activities that are included to the final evaluation of the course (seminar work, essays, tests etc.).
