Course objectives
The objective of the course is to introduce students to the study of basic principles of environmental protection, envrironmenal units, state environmental policy of the Czech Republic, EU and OECD. At the end of this course, students should:
- be able to address and analyze topical environmental problems and instruments removing pollution,
- know environmental units, anlalyze problems with their pollution and the determinants and consequences of the public sector and private sector,
- know principles, objectives and sectoral policies of the environmental policy of the Czech Republic, EU and OECD,
- be able to propose and apply non-market evaluation methods of valuatin environmental goods and services in project management of factual environmental public projects,
- be able to find and propose suitable funding for a selected environmental problem.
Syllabus
  • The content of this course is divided into the following lectures:
  • 1. Basic information about the course and the theory of the environment, environmental pollution, environmental instruments, environmental units
  • 2. Economical contexts of environmental protection, non-market valuation methods
  • 3. Envirmental protection funding
  • 4. Excursion - Sorting line of waste company Van Gansewinkel
  • 5. Environmental policy of Czech republic and European Union
  • 6. Regional aspects of Czech state environmenta policy
  • 7. Economic instruments of czech state environmental policy
  • 8. Energy and environment - economical contexts
  • 9. Protection of the climate system of the Earth and air pollution and it economical contexts
  • 10. Water protection and economical contexts of water protection
  • 11. Excursion - Brno - Modřice wastewater treatment plant
  • 12. Sustainable use of natural resources, material flows and economic consequences of waste management

Teaching methods
The course takes the form of both: lectures and seminars. Students have to take part in two excursions. There are explained main themes and issues of this course within lectures, which are further discussed during seminars. Presentation of students' seminar works is a part of seminars.
Assessment methods
The course is concluded with an oral exam (50 points, which form 50% of the course classification). Students are eligible to take the exam provided that they elaborate and present of a seminar paper on a given topic, which form 50% of the course classification (50 points). The teacher can award students with “bonus” points if they are active during seminars.
