- Prerequisites
- It examines contemporary processes of economic structure, class, gender, ethnicity, family and policy restructuring and their impact on paid and unpaid work in post-communist Czech Republic.
- Course Enrolment Limitations
- The course is offered to students of any study field.
- Course objectives
- Students should be able to: 1. demonstrate that they are familiar with the basic concepts by which social scientists understand labor market and socio-economic inequalities; 2. describe the major changes related to the study of socio-economic inequalities; 3. describe and summarize the development of sociological and economic theories in the field of labor market and socio-economic inequalities, including their origins and alterations; 4. compare and contrast different theoretical and practical approaches to the study of the chosen topic; 5. evaluate the contributions made by various theoretical perspectives to our understanding of labor market and socio-economic inequalities, and provide examples of their application in the field of labor market and socio-economic inequalities; 6. demonstrate that they are familiar with some of the important terms and trends related to research in the field of labor market and socio-economic inequalities; 7. classify the instruments used in reconciling work and family and evaluate the practical solutions to problems that might occur when reconciling work and family; 8. describe how and why globalization influences labor market and socio-economic inequalities, and the consequences of such changes on it.

- Topics: 1. Introduction, course organization.
- 2.Socio-economic inequality and its indicators in the labour market. Concepts of social classes and ISEI.
- 3. Social mobility as an indicator of socioeconomic inequalities in society
- 4. Social origin, education, labour market entry and social destination.
- 5. Non-standard paid work (spatial, temporal and contractual). Unpaid work – domestic and voluntary work in a gender perspective.
- 6. New challenges and problems of labour market after 1989
- 7. Unemployment and its socio-demographic consequences – age, gender, ethnicity and class perspectives
- 8.Work-life preferences and work-life balance within the framework of social and family policies.
- 9.Employment equity and work legislation in EU and Czech Republic.
- 10.Ethnicity and labour market – post-communist developments in the Czech Republic.
- 11.Globalization and the transformation of paid and unpaid work – consequences for the Czech Republic.

- Teaching methods
- The course is designed as a lecture-seminar format, with core readings discussed in-depth every week based on a careful reading of the texts prior to class. Two written exams will facilitate students’ understanding of the course materials and evaluate their acquired knowledge.
