- Course objectives
- The subject deals with mutual relations between economic development and the environment. Emphasis is placed on tools to address negative impacts (administrative and economic tools).
- Learning outcomes
- After successful finishing of this course students should be able to: - describe basic environmental continuities of economic development; - explain causes of market failure in the area of environmental goods; - demonstrate decisive instruments and measures stimulating implementation of strategy of sustainable development and - analyse their basic economic impacts.
- Syllabus
- 1 Global environmental issues - atmosphere and climate, water resources, deforestation, species extinction and other selected issues
- 2 General relationship between a market economy and environment - the concept of externalities, natural resources and their valuation, macroeconomic and microeconomic optimum of environmental quality
- 3 Environmental policy - main directions, international initiatives, the environmental policy of EU and the Czech Republic
- 4 Instruments of environmental protection - introduction and theory - tools of negative and positive stimulation
- 5 Institutional provision of environmental care - public administration, non-governmental organizations
- 6 Environmental policy in practice - practical applications of selected tools
- 7 Legal regulation of environmental protection - a system of legal instruments of the environment in the world, EU and in the Czech Republic, cross-sectional and component regulations in the Czech Republic
- 8 The concept of sustainable development and selected tools and measures to support its implementation
- 9 Ecological management of companies - ecological management systems, environmental standards, environmental accounting
- 10 Scientific and territorial aspects of environmental protection - territorial systems of ecological stability of the landscape, spatial planning

- Teaching methods
- Lessons take place mainly in the form of lectures (every week) and seminars (every odd week). It is expected activity in seminars and continuous self-study.
- Assessment methods
- The evaluation consists of two parts. During the semester, the student is evaluated for work and activity in seminars, for which he must obtain at least 60% of points. The course then concludes with a written exam, in which the student must obtain at least 60% of points as well. Detailed conditions are regulated in the study plan, which is published at the beginning of each semester.
