- Course objectives
- The aim of the course is to enable students to understand the importance of introducing and diffusion of innovations for the economic, social and environmental development of regions. The course also aims to acquaint students with the perception of innovation and technological progress in the historical and contemporary theories of regional development. The course also seeks to link the theoretical knowledge with the possibilities of its practical application within the innovation policy, especially the innovation policy implemented at the regional level.
- Learning outcomes
- After completing this course the students will be able to:
- discuss the role of innovation in regional development,
- assess the innovation environment and innovation performance of the regions,
- classify individual regional innovation systems,
- apply the theoretical knowledge in the design of innovation policy,
- compare the advantages and disadvantages of different innovation policy instruments,
- reflect the aspects of the regional economy based on innovation in their dissertation thesis.

- Teaching methods
- 24-hours block teaching (6 blocks per four hours) consists of lectures and discussion sections. Active participation of students is required. As a homework students process literature reviews of three selected foreign scientific articles and each review has a range of about 1 page. These reviews are presented and discussed within the teaching blocks.
- Assessment methods
- The overall assessment is based on the evaluation of three partial activities of the students: Written preparation and presentation of literature reviews (40%), active participation in lessons (10%) and processing of an essay (50%). The topic of the essay will be determined with regard to relevance to the dissertation thesis of the student.
