- Course objectives
- Ethically motivated computer applications are the main goal of this seminar. The central topic is the computer support of the visually, hearing and mentally impaired people. The main objective is to introduce the field and present the possibilities that assistive technologies provide. The practical experiences are presented by the specialists from the Teiresias Centre.
At the end of the course students should be able to: - to understand use of assistive technologies by handicapped people;
- to understand conventions used in accessible software development;
- to understand how to overcome barriers to communication with handicapped people. - Syllabus
- Ethically motivated applications are the main goal of this working seminary. The central theme is supporting visually impaired people. Some possible topics are:
- Information systems for visually impaired people.
- Orientation of blind people.
- Obstacle detection.
- Internet, WWW.
- Computer games for blind people.
- Applications of isolated word recognition.
- Applications of speech synthesis.
- Support of informatics study for visually impaired.
- Applications of ASR.
- Work on a phonetic corpus.
- And other topics - ideas are welcomed.
- Literature
- Literatura bude dle potřeby zadána v souvislosti s programem semináře.
- The literature will be specified for the concrete term and concrete topic on the beginning of the seminar.
- Teaching methods
- The course combines introductory information about the research areas with discussing the topics, students presentations, seminar works and group projects.
- Assessment methods
- To pass the course, students must attend the seminar regularly (at least 80 %) and present their own presentation on chosen topic in the field of assistive technology. The active participation in discussions is required as well. The solution to a presentation must be of an appropriate quality which is judged by the teacher.
