Course objectives
The main objective of the course is to present basic technologies of the dialogue communication and its application in social networks.
Learning outcomes
After the course the student is able to:
  • describe the meaning of social network
  • describe basic principles of human to human and human to computer dialogue communication
  • describe the relation between emotions and prosody and how they act in social interaction using dialogue communication
  • propose and verify correctness and usability of dialogue communication for particular purpose
  • propose, verify and optionally implement a dialogue interface for particular social network.
  • Syllabus
    • Speech communication and its social consequences.
    • Speech synthesis - the basic principles and phases of the time domain speech synthesis, phonetic transcription, prosody. Practical tests of freely available text-to-speech synthesis systems. SSML - basics of syntax and its fields of application.
    • Speech recognition - basic principles, tools for improvement of ASR accuracy, semantic interpretation of recognized speech.
    • Human to human and human to computer dialogue communication, social aspects of dialogue systems.
    • Principle terms - dialogue, utterance, turn, dialogue system, dialogue strategy. Methods of dialogue system implementation. IT supported methods of human to human and human to computer dialogue communication.
    • W3C VoiceBrowser Activity - standards. Simple W3C VoiceBrowser Activity standards based dialogue systems design using the system and mixed initiative dialogue strategy.
    • User modelling, modelling of computer emotions using a prosody.
    • Social networks - social networking basics, types of social networks, state of the art of dialogue/discussion in the social networks, future prospects of dialogue communication in the social networks.
    • Team project in the area of social networks and dialogue communication.

    Teaching methods
    Theoretical Lectures with practically oriented seminars.
    Assessment methods
    Each student presents a lecture on a selected topic and works in a team of 2 or 3 students on a project. The project is argued at the end of the semestr.
