Course objectives
The goal is to provide practical information on medical terminology of Greco-Latin origin, and familiarization with the rules of use with regard to the needs of physiotherapists. The course is taught as ancillary discipline for medical fields, especially anatomy, pathology, and others. At the end of the course the student will be able to understand the commonly used medical terminology.
Syllabus
  • 1st week: Introduction to the course - objectives and course content, general characteristics of Latin grammar in terms of the practical needs of a physiotherapist, a brief outline of the verb, the basics of phonetics, phonology and graphics Latin.
  • 2nd week: Declination system - nouns, adjectives and numerals I and II. declination (also of Greek origin); origin of participial terminology, the most frequent suffixes and their meanings; multi-word terms and the most frequent prepositions - compositional rules.
  • 3rd week: Declination system - nouns IV. and V declination, the most frequent suffixes and their meanings; deverbal principles of word formation of nouns IV. declination.
  • 4th week: Declination system - nouns, adjectives and numerals III. declination; terms participial origin, the most frequent suffixes and their meanings.
  • 5th week: regular / irregular comparison of adjectives and adverbs; deadjective derivation of adverbs, and complete summary of the Latin prepositions, roman numerals system and their compositional nature, expression prohibition.
  • 6th week: Less frequent forms of substantives and adjectives (gerund and gerundivum) general rules of word formation for medical terminology (anatomical, pathological and other nomenclature) ...
  • 7th week: Prefixes Latin and Greek origin - meaning, function and applications.
  • 8th week: Suffixes of Latin and Greek origin - meaning, function and applications.
  • 9th week: Characteristics of compound vocational terms - the function, use, method of formation.
  • 10th week: verbal base (Greek and Latin) used as first or second and subsequent composite component.
  • 11th week: verbal base (Greek and Latin), used as a terminal component composite.
  • 12th week: A brief overview of vocational terminology, composite according to semantic and thematic groups - basic word formation models. The most frequent Latin abbreviations and names of drug groups. Application of knowledge gained while working with a variety of texts with medical and health topics.
  • 13th week: Requirements for the exam, final test.
