Course objectives
To acquaint students with the emergence of professionalism in the world and the professional sports club and it’s functioning in sports games.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course the student will be able to:
Discuss the historical development of professional sports club;
Explain the operation of a professional sports club;
Assess the competitive balance of the individual leagues;
Measure the performance of a sports club;
Describe the funding of domestic and foreign professional sports club in sports games;
Interpret club valuation principles;
Explain the valuation of players
Discuss the role of player unions in the North American leagues;
Characterize the position of professional sports clubs in the Czech sporting environment;
Develop teamwork within the solving specific problems of sports practice in this area.

In addition, the graduate of the course will have critical knowledge of financial management at a professional level. They will be able to use these in practice, especially in problem areas:
- evaluating the effectiveness of the organisation (financial analysis), as well as
- the evaluation of the effectiveness of the organisation's investment plans (the area of investment effectiveness evaluation),
- budget development and implementation,
- costing and
- obtaining sources of financing for sports activities.
Syllabus
  • The structure of the sports an environment: associations, groups, clubs, national and international leagues etc.;
  • D between European and North American concepts of professional leagues in team sports games, differences in goals, individual and team sports;
  • Closed and open sport competition, used regulatory instruments, performance indicators of clubs and leagues;
  • Professionalization of the sport and its impact on sports legislation, labor relations, players market, talented players market;
  • Players' unions, collective bargaining;
  • The most important tax payments at a sports club in the Czech Republic, Europe and USA;
  • Four models of financing according by Andreff, contributions from sport federations;
  • Financing: public sector of CZ- state, local government, EU, private sector - investors, sponsorships, business; TV Rights: individual and collective sales, cost structure and revenue of Czech clubs, compared with other countries;
  • valuation of sports club sports and players;
  • fan as a specific client, clubs care about the fans and their cultivation, spectator violence.

The student will complete the following during the semester: 1. three written tests - 2 of which must be passed in order to be admitted to the oral examination
