Course objectives
Introduction to the History and Development of Swing Dances
Students will familiarize themselves with the historical context of swing dances, their emergence in the 1920s to 1940s, and the impact they had on the social life of the time. Understanding the cultural significance of dance as a response to swing music, the jazz era, and the development of dance styles such as solo jazz, charleston, lindy charleston, and lindy hop. Study of key personalities and icons of these dance styles and their contribution to the contemporary understanding of swing dance.
Development of Basic Dance Skills Mastering the basic steps and techniques for solo jazz, charleston, lindy charleston, and the basics of lindy hop. Emphasis on proper posture, step combinations, transitions between elements, and synchronization of movements with music. Improving flexibility, coordination, and balance, which are essential for the dynamic nature of swing dance.
Development of Creativity and Musicality Guiding students on how to improvise and respond to music in real-time, a fundamental aspect of swing dance. Developing the ability to perceive the swing rhythm and adapt movements to reflect musical phrasing, dynamics, and tempo. Encouraging individual dance expression and fostering personal interpretation of music and movement, which is the foundation of creativity in dance.
Choreography Creation Introducing students to various dance formations and structures that are part of swing dance, including the creation of dance patterns and shapes. Composing smaller choreographies that combine technique and improvisation, and teaching their interpretation and execution. Creating larger group choreographies with a focus on teamwork, coordination, mutual communication, and interaction between partners.
Emphasis on Fun, Relaxation, and Joy of Dance Creating a pleasant and open environment for all students, regardless of their dance level, where everyone can feel comfortable. Promoting playfulness and spontaneity in movement, which is characteristic of swing dance, even with its technical demands.
