No previous exercise experience or special equipment is required to participate in the class other than the usual exercise clothing. Training weapons are part of the gym equipment and will be provided in class. - Course Enrolment Limitations

- The course aims to train in a selected Japanese school of fencing (Tenshin shoden katori shinto ryu) with emphasis on:
- the development of motor skills in martial arts
- fitness development
- psychological development
- the overall benefit of maintaining a healthy exercise regime and reducing mental stress during study - Learning outcomes
- After the course, graduate student is able to:
- understand the historical background of Japanese fencing and its influence on nowadays combative sports
- describe parts of Japanese armour and sword
- list medieval Japanese weapons and describe their parts
- practise diverse separate techniques of Japanese fencing
- practise diverse sets of movements (kata)
- distinguish correct fighting distance
- experiment with fighting techniques
- practise with a partner safely
- understand the meaning and benefits of regular physical activity for mental and physical health
- understand specifics of the benefits of martial arts for physical activity for mental and physical health - Syllabus
