Course objectives
The course aims to develop students’ knowledge from the field of school management and counselling. The students will understand the underlying principles of the school as a specific organization. The course aims to develop students’ competencies for solving problems in the teaching profession.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student is able: - to define basic concepts in the field of school management - to explain basic concepts in the field of general management - to describe the structure of the educational system in the Czech Republic - to identify important factors influencing school culture - to discuss various possibilities of school evaluation - to distinguish functions of pedagogical workers - to analyze the organizational structure of the school - to apply knowledge on legislation into labor-law relations in schools - to analyze school documents and its’ role in school education - to describe the system of counselling in the Czech Republic - to identify relevant actors of counselling in schools - to explain their roles and opportunities for cooperation with parents.
Syllabus
  • 1. Historical overview of theories in the field of management, their reflection in the field of school management.
  • 2. Basic concepts in management (vision, setting aims, planning, managing, leadership, human resources, decision making, organizing, controlling, levels of management, school management, classroom management). Motivation (internal, external, Maslow’s hierarchy of needs).
  • 3. Educational policy in the Czech Republic, Strategy of Educational Policy 2030+, Framework Educational Programmes and School Educational Programmes, Education law.
  • 4. School founders, types of schools, school autonomy, the school system, right to education, obligatory school attendance in the Czech Republic.
  • 5. School culture, Public Relations, presenting school (www, social media, information systems), classroom climate.
  • 6. External and internal school evaluation. Czech School Inspectorate. Functions of external and internal school evaluation. Annual School Reports.
  • 7. School headmaster and deputy headmaster – their role in management and leadership of schools. School financing. Additional school activities.
  • 8. The organizational structure in the school, after-school childcare, interest and leisure activities, school counselling system, working groups of teachers. Boards of schools.
  • 9. Legislation for teachers (occupational health and safety, GDPR, children’s law), specific legislation and requirements for Physical Education (evaluation of students), school rules, operational code for the gym, playing area, etc.
  • 10. Legislation for employees in schools (job searching, selection procedure, on-boarding), rights and duties of employees, instructions for employees, lesson planning. Supervision and mentoring. Professional development and further education of teachers.
  • 11. Other/additional functions of pedagogical workers: class teacher, counsellor, prevention specialist, school psychologist, remedial teacher, teacher assistant, coordinator of the school curriculum, ICT coordinator, etc.
  • 12. School documents (school educational program, class register, school register, pupil’s record book, individual educational plan).
  • 13. System of counselling in the Czech Republic (pedagogical-psychological counselling, special pedagogical centers) and other institutions. Counselling system in schools. Legislation for counselling in schools.
  • 14. Actors of counselling in schools – prevention specialist, school psychologist, remedial teacher, teacher assistant. Cooperation with parents and with other counselling institutions. Individual educational plan, measures for supporting children with special needs.

Lecture, discussion, team work, individual work. During on-line sessions the activity of students will be stimulated using instructional applications.

Completing particular tasks, preparing and presenting thematic papers, written test, oral exam including application in practice.
