Course objectives
Sociology is very helpful when it comes to studying sports as a social phenomenon. It provides concepts, theoretical approaches, and research methods to describe and understand behaviour and social interactions as they occur in particular social and cultural contexts. Just qualitative changes in sports have updated new concepts as physical recreation, professional sports, high-performance sports, elite sports etc. becoming involved and staying in sports occurs in connection with the general socialization process in the lives of people. The phenomenon of sport has been strongly transformed during the past two or three decades, mostly as a consequence of the process of commercialisation and medialization of elite professional sports, mostly in a global extent. The main objective of the lesson is to properly understand the mutual relations of sport and society in local, regional and global contexts.
Learning outcomes
Main output from the perspective of knowledge of the students is deeper understanding of mutual relations os society and sport in the context of sedentary, postindustrial, consumerist society.
