Course objectives
The course focuses on Czech politics after November 1989. It combines a chronological line and a thematic perspective on selected aspects of the period. The aim is for students to gain knowledge of the actors, realities and relationships of the time and to be able to understand and interpret key moments, trends and phenomena. The course primarily focuses on Czech politics, which it traces in the broader context of economic, social, media, cultural and other changes after 1989
Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course, students will be able to: - identify the root causes of the loss of legitimacy of the communist regime; - describe and analyse the major political actors of the transition and post-transition years and the relationships between them; - understand the institutional structure of the new democracy; - characterize and interpret important events, issues, trends and phenomena of development since 1989 (Velvet Revolution, economic reform, the division of Czechoslovakia, the Opposition Agreement, etc.)

  • Communist regime, society and opposition before 1989 2. The Civic Forum and the changes in its strategy towards the collapsing regime 3. The birth of pluralist politics and the development of the Civic Forum 4. The debate on de-communization, lustrations and political consequences 5. Economic reform, privatisation and the transition process 6. The division of Czechoslovakia 7. The period of the Klaus governments 8. The Opposition Treaty - its background, formation and form 9. Unstable governance 2002-2013 10. Crisis of 2013 11. Selected aspects of contemporary Czech history (technocratic governments, the phenomenon of political entrepreneurs, migration crisis, coronavirus pandemic, etc.).
