Course objectives
The course aims to introduce the main issues related to drug use, both on the individual as well as social level. During the first part of the course, the use of illicit and legal drugs is defined based on the Bio-psycho-socio-spiritual model. Attention is also given to national and international drug policy, including prevention, treatment, and harm reduction strategies. The second part of the course focuses on the services provided to drug users in the Czech Republic, emphasizing the variety of social work approaches and methods. The issue of drug use is also explained in the context of related social problems such as homelessness, domestic violence, sex business, or mental health. Last but not least, the focus of the course is on the collaboration with people with experience with drug use. It introduces various roles they can play as consultants for individuals and in forming the drug policy.
Learning outcomes
After completion of the course, students will know about essential legal and illegal drugs, their effects and related risks. Students will know various definitions of drug use and the contexts in which these definitions were created and used. Students can assess the complexity of clients' living situations and suggest adequate social work interventions. They will also understand drug use in the context of related social problems and the role that people with experience play in the services for drug users as well as for drug policy formation. Students will be able to use critical thinking to locate and evaluate various sources of data and information and reflect on their assumptions.
