Course objectives
The aim of the History of Printed Media course in early modern times is to acquaint listeners with the history of the media in the key countries of the Euro-American civilization space (Great Britain, France, Germany, the United States of America) from their early beginnings, but especially from the emergence of mass communication in connection with the invention of printing until the end of the 18th century, when the French and American revolutions began the transition to civil society on the European and American continents.
The course is concentrated on the roots of mass communication in ancient times and the Middle Ages, on the forerunners of periodical printing in the form of written newspapers and correspondence, on the emergence of printed media after the invention of printing, on various forms of leaflet newspapers, as well as on the beginnings of periodical printing, newspapers, magazines and bulletins of the 17th and 18th centuries in Germany, England, France, North America, the Netherlands and other Europeans. However, the course's attention is also focused on the causes and conditions of the development of mass communication in the context of economic, social, political, cultural and, last but not least, technological and organizational. The course also notes the legal aspects of the development of the periodic press, press conditions and censorship practice, the comprehensive system of press regulation (censorship, the structure of concessions and privileges, economic barriers) as well as the struggle for freedom of public criticism and, by and by the way, freedom of the press as such. The focus of the course is also the theme of the periodical press audience and the period reflection of the function of emerging mass communication and mass media.
