Course objectives
This course examines the development of European Union (EU) by considering the processes of political, economic and security change taking place in the European politics after 1989. Analyse the historical development of the European integration process including the basic framework construction of single market and contemplate the changing strategy of EU as a result of the cold war ending. Particular policy focus will be upon the EU economic position in world economic, the push to create a single currency in the twelve member states of the European Monetary Union. It will analyse the issues of the expansion of the EU in the Treaty on European Union (1992), Treaty of Amsterdam (1997), Treaty of Nice (2001) and other important decisions and their consequences for relations between the EU institutions and the member states and between the EU and other parts of Europe, as well as the rest of the world. The course shall turn its attention to the major political and economic problems in conjunction with the impending enlargement of the EU. The inclusion of most countries of central and eastern Europe enlarged the EU form the early fifteen members to twenty-five members and will affect most areas of decision making within the EU. It will also reflect the constitutional development of the last years in the EU, linked to the European Convention session and draft of the Constitution for Europe.

Assessment methods (in Czech)
A commitment to reading and active class participation. Questions and comments on EU-related topics are welcome. Every student has to write a semester work in consultation with a lector using professional literature and web sources. This work should be approximately 8 pages. At the end of course will be written a final test from the individual lectures and readings. A student will pass the test, if he/she reaches 22 points in 30 maximum. There is one textbook for this course for each student. The student will also have a possibility to get the copy of the Powerpoint presentations used in lectures (in pdf format). Your final grade will be based on: an active class participation 10 %, a semester work writing 35 %, successful passing a test 55 %. Please note all course requirements are necessary to complete the course and receive a final grade.
