Course objectives
The course aims to introduce the manyfold problem of terrorism, especially its various historic eras and variants of its development. The topics of the lesosns will be set as to offer the students the broadest possible overview on this phenomenon. It is aimed as an overview course, so the issues will not be researched deeply, but introduced rather horizontally. The components of state as well as nonstate terrorism will be presented.

  • 1. A brief theoretical setting of terrorism 2. Early terrorism, prototerrorism – thugs, assassins, etc. 3. The great French revolution 4. The terror of Russian anarchists 5. Balkan ethno-territorial terrorist groups – VMRO, Black Hand, etc. 6. Racist terrorism in the U.S.A. – Ku-klux-klan 7. Mid-term test 8. State terror of the Stalin-regime type – the case study of the Czechoslovak Republic 9. The development of Palestinian terrorism; the revision term of mid-term test 10. Leftist ethno-territorial terrorism – Armenian group ASALA, Bask group ETA 11. The development of Irish terrorism – the outline of the IRA activity 12. The roots of global jihadism – how al-Kaida was established
