Course objectives
Students become known with theories that explain the emergence and the development of the welfare state programs. At the end of the course, students should be able to use selected theory in explaining changes in selected social policy program.
Syllabus
  • The course is devoted to the following topics and issues:
  • 1. “Demand” and “supply” theories of the emergence of welfare state.
  • 2. The “industrialism” theory.
  • 3. The “working class struggle theory”.
  • 4. The “interest” or “risk” group theory.
  • 5. Neo-marxism.
  • 6. “State centered” theories.
  • 7. “Theory” and “typology” of welfare state.
  • 8. Hypotheses on the emergence and changes of the welfare state.

Assessment methods
The course consists in lectures, writing two essays and group consultations concerning writing essays. The course is completed by exam which consists in elaborating two essays: „Explaining the change of the selected program by relevant theory” and „The relevance of basic questions of typology of the welfare states in understanding the selected national welfare state”.
