Course objectives
The course is intended for students starting their studies at university. The aim of the course is to help students find their way in the first term of university in areas that are demanding at the beginning of their studies as far as adaptation is concerned.
Syllabus
  • Classes are held in four thematic blocks always consisting of 6 lessons. 1. Introductory meeting. Adaptation questionnaire, assessment and discussion about problems with starting to study at university. Orientation in the school system, in the range of individual facilities (canteen, dormitory, libraries, computer rooms, etc.), getting acquainted with student organisations, possibilities of internship abroad. Work with the Information System of Masaryk University – enrolment, orientation on the webpages of the individual departments, subject databases. Assistance with designing an individual time table. 2. How to write a seminar, final or diploma work. Presentation and communication skills. Library – searching in electronic databases. 3. Stress, stress factors and their symptomatological consequences for performance and human mental and physical health. Psychological issues of adaptation, coping with stress. Frustration. Defence mechanisms. 4. How to learn efficiently. Importance of memory and attention. Study styles. Motivation to study, motivation factors. Procrastination.

Assessment methods
The course consists of lectures and seminars with an emphasis on introducing students to the possibilities of avoiding and solving various adaptation problems. During the term, students write a seminar work on an assigned topic and prepare it as an in-class presentation. There is an oral exam at the end of the course.
