- Course objectives
- The course is designed to introduce the basic statistics necessary to analyze data provided by various quantitative studies using SPSS. The main aims are: 1) to introduce the basic notions in statistics - population, parameters, descriptive statistics, inferential statistics, sample, variables etc.; 2) to build and use variables and databases using SPSS; 3) to introduce the basic statistical data analysis methods using SPSS. In other words, graduates of this course are able to:
explain basic notions in statistics
demonstrate ability to build databases in SPSS
employ SPSS in order to analyse data - Syllabus
- TOPICS TO BE COVERED: o Measurement and data display o Numerical summaries of distribution o The basis of statistical inference o Tests of significance – parametric and nonparametric tests o Bivariate analysis for categorical variables using conditional tables and correlation analysis o Linear regression o Factor analysis

- Teaching methods
- The course will be given in the form of workshops, where both teacher and students give oral presentations. Students are expected to complete the weekly readings prior to class. Questioning, explaining, collaborating, and demonstrating will be used as teaching methods and strategies.
- Assessment methods
- Students are expected to complete weekly readings prior to class, prepare their assignments and attend classes. There will be regular homework. The course ends with an exam based on the theoretical and practical issues presented during the semester: a written test (20 minutes) designed to evaluate the theoretical issues, and a practical test (40 minutes) aimed to evaluate SPSS usage in solving a statistical problem.
