Course objectives
At the end of the course students should gain basic orientation in sphere of the counsulting for children and youth. They will comprehend the issues of children with special educational needs, and they will be able to recognize various forms of psychologival intervention for children with distinctive risk of school unsussessfulness, with personality and social development problems, including defects in family relationships with impacts on children. After passing the course students are able to discuss the main topics and problems on care towards children and youth.
Syllabus
  • I. Counseling psychology for children and youth introduction 1. pedagogical – psychological counseling - Pedagogical – psychological counseling system - Legal regulation - Consequences and cooperation with other specializations - Psychologist personality 2. Specifics of children counseling care - Work with parents - Work with child - Investigation process - Investigation completion, arrangement for the benefit of client 3. Basic information about counseling for handicapped: - the most important psychological knowledge about handicapped children and their families - disablement influence on child, and parents - educational attitudes of parents, impact of disabled child birth on family structure and function , brothers and sisters relationships - II. Pre-school period - developmental issue: development retardation, development non-uniformity (for example in speech, movement, and pervasive development defects) - Problems appearing in pre-school age (educational, basic physiological functions problems (eating, sleep, excretion). Sensitivity, anxious stages, hyperactivity, brother and sister relationships, family situation). - children with sensual defects, schools for children with sensual defect - III, IV: school period l. Entering school attendance - Factors influencing the school entrance - School attendance delay - The most frequent reasons of school delay, casuistic 2. School failure - Cognitive reasons, non-intellectual, family influence, educational process, health conditions influence, wider surrounding influence. Casuistic - specific defects of learning process, behavior, children integration and dyslexia and others - Basics school problems, transferring to different learning programs Casuistic. 3. Other problematics in school age - Profession selection counseling - Talented child at school V, VI. Education 1. Behavior issue (ADHD, ADD ..) 2. Excruciations problems and children abusing problems (forms, appearances) 3. Educational problems (problems of being truant, steal chicane problems, etc., casuistic 4. Lectures, seminar Graduation condition: a) Essay in extension of 4-5 pages. b) Casuistic creation (to use practice possibilities and experience in school counseling institution (PPP,SPC), (including anamnesis, used methods description – possibility to consult during lectures) Exam: oral Each student has to bring own list of literature from the child counseling psychology. Topics of psychology are the same as topics of lectures.
