- Course objectives
- The course is drafted as a follow-up course within the european studies programme and it is therefore limited to the study of European institutions‘ matters. It ties up on the introductory course European intergation to develop it further and works with information and knowledge acquired in a previous study. By the end of the course, students should be in a position to describe an institutional framework of the EU and explain it’s decision-making process.
- Syllabus
- 1) Introductory lecture – content of the course, obligations to be met by students
- 2) Introduction to the topic of an institutional development of the EC/EU, polarity of supranational and intergovernmental model, specifics of the EU, intorduction to the european law
- 3) The European council – composition, significance and tasks of the institution
- 4) The Council of the EU - composition, significance and tasks of the institution
- 5) The Presidency of The Council of the EU
- 6) The European parliament - historical development and structure
- 7) The European parliament - functions
- 8) The European comission - historical development, significance and tasks of the institution
- 9) The European comission - mechanism of lobbying, the Commission’s role in a legislative process
- 10) The Economic and social committee, The Committee of regions – position of consultative bodies, Court of auditors and it’s significance, European agencies
- 11) Decision-making in the EU (budget process, decision-making procedures, consent procedure)

- Teaching methods
- As the course is a part of distance learning, the main method of studying is self learning. The students are offered e-mail consultations with teacher as well as one lecture.
- Assessment methods
- Exam is held in a written form, composed of one in-term test based on the knowledge of documents (22% of points), written essay (11% of points) and a final written exam (66% of points).
