Course objectives
Students are able, at the end of the course, to know and apply different theoretical approaches in the electoral systems research for the analysis of the elections, electoral and party systems.

  • 1. Classification of the electoral systems and the terminology 2. Discussion about the electoral reform in the Czech Republic 3. Research of the stability and stabilization of the party systems and the electoral systems 4. Research of the electoral systems I. 5. Research of the electoral systems II. 6. Majoritarian electoral systems 7. List proportional electoral systems and party systems 8. Mixed electoral systems and party systems 9. STV and party systems 10. Semi-PR electoral systems 11. Electoral engineering and electoral reforms 12. Electoral systems and elections in the divided societies Class resources are available to students through Masaryk University’s online Information System (IS). Teaching methods
The course is mostly conducted through lectures, reading of the important theoretical papers and applications of the theory of the electoral systems and writing of the seminar paper and the monitoring of the elections.
Assessment methods
In is necessary to get at least 30 points of maximum 50 points. Seminar paper - maximum 15 points, electoral monitoring - maximum 5 points, final written test - maximum 30 points.
