Particularly, this intensive short course is intended to provide an overview of the sociological understanding of the issues of borders and borderlands, with special reference to Central, Eastern and South-Eastern Europe. Accordingly, it aims at introducing the students to a diverse literature on «border studies» through the analysis of some selected scientific articles on the topic. Thus, the sociological analysis of the border shall maintain a focus on different dimensions, such as: 1 - The relations between border, frontier and periphery 2 - The epistemological and theoretical framing or border studies. 3 - The social dimension of the border vs. political-administrative and cultural ones. 4 - The aspect of national identity in border making. 5 - Cross-border cooperation and front-lines. 6 - Regional and local approaches. VII. block (13th week - December 10, 2014): PROF. SAŠA BOŽIĆ - Dr. SIMONA KUTI: MIGRATION AND TRANSNATIONAL SOCIAL SPACES: CONCEPTUALISATION AND RESEARCH. In the block we shall discuss the theoretical and empirical foundation of the new concept within migration research – transnational social space. Contemporary migration research departs from classical models which define migration as a unidirectional move across the boundaries of national containers, i.e. nation-states, and concentrates on social ties and mobility of migrants in several locations whose social relations and transactions constitute new forms of social space.
