Course objectives
The aim of the course is to explain main development tendencies of the European monetary integration with the connection the creation of the EMU and to focus on actual transformation of the project in the context of sovereign debt crisis. Students should discuss the conceptions of key actors and the last events relating eurozone. At the end of the course students should be able to understand and interpret the processes leading to the EMU origin and affecting its functioning.

  • 2. Theoretical approaches to EMU and their limits
  • 3. Monetary integration development in Europe - main milestones
  • 4. The system of eurozone functioning a and its arrangements
  • 5. Institutional structure of EMU and connection to the EU's institutions
  • 6. Monetary and economic policy and its role in the EMU conception
  • 7. Interests and approaches of France and Germany
  • 8. Southern wing - Italy and Spain
  • 9. United Kingdom's and its approaches to EMU
  • 10. Small states - Benelux and nordic countries
  • 11. Greek position and impacts of its accession to eurozone
  • 12. Central and eastern European states and their position.

Teaching methods
Presentations, class discussion, reading, homework.
Assessment methods
The course is finished by the exam. The single parts of it are: an active participation in discussions, to give a presentation (team work), submitting an opinion essay and passing a final test. For details see the study materials in the university IS.
