- Course objectives
- This interactive course covers the various forms of news genres in the print media. Via a set of tests and stylistic exercises students discover their ability to apply their (earlier acquired) knowledge in practice. They will learn how to carry out thorough text improvement – using a collection of authentic journalistic texts. They will also undertake more detailed stylistical intermediate exercises. Team work forms an important part of the teaching method.

- Syllabus outline 1. Writing headlines. Sub-headlines. Errors in writing headlines. Analysis of set of headlines. 2. Information saturation of text. News value – suitable and unsuitable stylistic choices. Text analysis. 3. Errors in lexica choice. Types of weed word. Stylistic tag, parasitic expressions, inadequate verbs. Incorrect forms of verb government. Zeugma. Text analysis. Exercises. 4. Reports taken from foreign-language sources (Anglicisms, Russianisms, Germanisms, etc.). Text analysis. 5. Devices for creating a current affairs text. Standard models – updating. Intertextual references. 6. Logic, comprehensibility – errors in knitting the text together. Text analysis (sports reports). 7. Types of introduction. Core of the message (theme – rheme). Word order. Sentence order. Errors in genre construction. Text analysis. 8. Composition, Text interconnectivity. Paragraph hook. Text analysis. 9. Construction of current affairs text, genre structure. Errors in creating the structure. Incorrect subordinate clauses. Text analysis. Exercises. 10. Choice of topic, paragraph, proportions of text. Types of ending. Making the point. Condensation – expansion. Text analysis. Exercises. 11. Textological improvement of largish text – approach.
