- Course objectives
- The course focuses on the social life on the internet, specifically with regard to the group processes evaluated from the psychological and sociological perspectives. The goal is to present the potential and role of internet for the social sphere.
- Learning outcomes
- The students will acquire following knowledge important for: - reflection of the role of the internet for current social life - depict this role on both micro and macro level - identify specific groups for whom internet brings diverse risks and benefits
- Syllabus
- 1) Internet as a social environment: An introduction 2) Theoretical perspectives applied in research on internet and group behavior 3) Internet in the context of globalization. Implications for social capital. Digital divide 4) The role of sociodemographic factors: Age, SES, etnicity, gender, or sexuality 5) The dvelopmental perspective. Mediation and regulation of internet use. Potential for identity developemnt, relationships, developmental tasks. 6) Online communities and social network sites. Communication across different channels and platforms - the role for group involvement. 7) Internet as political and public space. 8) Subcultures and interest-groups online. 9) Risky online groups. 10) Internet as a source of information and materials. Role for development in culture and marketing. 11) Final presentations
