The course is intented to all students, who want to acquire basic knowledge of the European Union. It is open to all students of the Masaryk University without limitations. The only exception are certain subjects at Faculty of Social Studies.

Course objectives
The course discusses the basic insight view to the question of European Integration. It is aimed at the political development of the EU, its institutions, policy and the enlargement process. The main objectives of the course are: to understand the basic turning-points of the EU development including the actual situation, to orientate in the institutional structure of the EU, to gain knowledge about the functioning of the fundamental EU policies and to understand the process of the EU enlargement.
Learning outcomes
Identify main factors of the development of European integration up to now.
Describe the institutional framework of the EU and its functioning.
Explain the division of powers in the EU and policy-making in key areas.
Interpret the process of EU enlargement and its effects on further integration.
Syllabus
  • The subject is divided into several blocks:
  • I. 1.-3. History of the European Integration, overview of the basic treaty frameworks (Markéta Pitrová);
  • II. 4.-6. Institutions of EU, their functioning, decision making process (Petr Kaniok, Markéta Pitrová);
  • III. 7.-9. Common policies, chosen coordination policies, financing of EU (Zdeněk Sychra);
  • IV. 10.-11. EU enlargement, strategies and approaches (Zdeněk Sychra).

Teaching methods
The course is based on lectures and individual work with the study materials.
Assessment methods
The course is finished with an exam. It is based on four intermediate tests following each thematic session.
These tests consist of number closed questions (30+30+30+20 for each thematic block). For passing the exam the student needs to get at least 72 points (65 %). The examination is held in the facilities of the IS MU – online testing. Division of points within the final results: A = 110-103, B = 102-95, C = 94-88, D = 87-80, E = 79-72, F = 71 and less.

The course is taught annually.
Information on course enrolment limitations: Kurz nemohou zapisovat studenti oboru Politologie (od im. roku 2009/2010, kdy ho musí absolvovat jako povinný kurz pod kódem POL359 Současná Evropská unie). Studenti oboru Evropská studia si zapisují předmět pouze v 1. ročníku bakalářského stupně.
