Course objectives
The course consists of supervised research on a particular sociological topic and the syllabus is developed in consultation between the teacher and the student. This structure allows the student to perform in-depth research on a topic of interest, which may also be related to the teacher’s research project(s). The course is designed to address sociological research in greater detail than a traditional methodology course. After extensive research on the selected topic, the student writes a substantive (3,000-4,000 word) paper on the results, elaborating the findings.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, a student will be able to:
-Conduct research related to a particular sociological topic;
-Apply sociological methodology and methods to a particular sociological topic;
-Write a substantive (3,000-4,000 word) research paper, presenting findings in a coherent and logical manner.
Syllabus
  • The syllabus for the particular topic of the independent study will be developed in consultation between the teacher and the student.
  • Overall, it should contain:
  • - Requirements for the design of the research;
  • - Methodological texts on how to study the topic of the research;
  • - A schedule of specific research tasks to be performed throughout the semester.
Literature
  • Literature will be based on the particular topic of research and developed in consultation between the teacher and the student
Teaching methods
The intended outcome of this course is in-depth research on a particular sociological topic. This is achieved through independent reading, research, and writing as well as periodic consultations. The student and teacher meet regularly (at least four times per semester) to discuss the research and to consult on the final research paper.

In-person consultations with the supervisor (about 10 hours)
Research (about 130 hours)
Reading (about 70 hours)
Writing the research paper (approximately 40 hours)
Total: about 250 hours

LITERATURE
Read a minimum of 350 pages of literature
Assessment methods
The teacher makes an assessment as to whether the student has fulfilled the tasks expected to be completed during the semester. The tasks are weighted as follows:

Discussion of research during consultations: 20%
Research Findings and Paper: 80%
