- Course objectives
- The qualitative strategy currently offers a large number of research approaches and methods that differ from one another by different theoretical orientations. Researchers tend to have a qualitative strategy in trouble with the justification options specific research methods and approaches in relation to the theme and cognitive problem. The aim of the course is to practice skills of logical and theoretical justification for choice of specific research methodology dissertation.
- Learning outcomes
- Student will be able, after completing the course to propose and explain the appropriate method or methods of qualitative research social phenomenon, topic or issue.
- Syllabus
- 1. Relationship between Quantitative and Qualitative Strategies in Research Practice. Examples of tension and combination of both strategies in practice: Two-Phase Design, Dominant and Less Dominant Design, Mixed Design.
- 2. Selected areas and themes of social work and public policy for the application of qualitative research design:
- - ethnography of target groups and communities;
- - symbolic interactions and organizational processes;
- - Complex Systems with Significant Amplitude (Grouded Theory);
- - case studies;
- - phenomenological studies of everyday practices and attitudes;
- - participatory research and democratic evaluation of interventions
- 3. Selected methods of qualitative research and their use in the formation of theories:
- - studying complexity using grounded theory;
- - studying the internal focus group focus;
- - testing pre-models using case study;
- - Conversation interview and in-depth analysis
- 4. Techniques of conversation interview and its analysis
- 5. Techniques of hermeneutic interpretation of organizational and political documents
- 6. Critical Discursive Analysis Techniques
- 7. Techniques of generating "grouded theory" using coding processes
- 8. Preparation of a seminar project of qualitative research methodology for dissertation work. The design will have the following structure:
- - formulation of a research problem;
- - Theoretical or conceptual basis for problem formulation;
- - basic research questions and their assessment based on qualitative research components - expected conceptual development (what types of preliminary claims can be the output of research?);
- - Sample creation and context description for data interpretation;
- - methods of data collection and analysis;
- - the cognitive and ethical limits of the methodology used
